Dr. Joshua Washington Vick Joshua Washington Vick was the son of Samuel W.W.Vick and Mary Polly H.Taylor Vick. He married Rozetta Richardson December 18, 1872. Joshua was a medical doctor in Selma, Johnston County, North Carolina. Dr. Vick served in the North Carolina legislature from 1894-1896. He was a Steward in the Methodist Episcopal Church in Selma. After his brother in law, Lunsford Richardson graduated from pharmacy school he worked out of Dr. Joshua Vick's medical office and pharmacy. While in Johnston County, Lunsford invented Richardson's Croup and Pneumonia Cure Salve and later changed the name to Vick's Salve in honor of Dr. Vick.

Oak Hill, an ambitious Federal plantation house erected in 1823-1825 by Samuel Hairston, was the work of James Dejarnett, a prominent area builder, and was noted for its fine woodwork. Oak Hill was gutted by fire in 1988.

Cognac Castle Graffiti This section of the castle had been used as a prison at some point during the cruel French war history. The prisoners carved their names and images of boats and other objects into the limestone of the walls. Almost reminiscent of cave paintings, or some kind of ancient graffiti. John Hoge, James Mayo’s brother was taken there when he was captured in the French-Indian War in Braddock's Army. It was supposed to have been killed at Ford Duquesne in 1755, but later realized he was alive until 1793. The name John is carved into the wall, assuming it is John Hoge.

James Hoge House (Known and the Heater House) The property on which the Heater House stands was part of a 40,000-acre tract owned by Jost Hite. He parceled off a 760-acre section that he sold to fellow pioneer James Hoge (1740). Hoge then built an outside kitchen, barn, springhouse, cider mill and press, granary, and stables on the property, which was referred to as Cedar Grove Farm. When Hoge died, his will transferred the property to his son, Solomon Hoge. It is known as the Heater house since the Heaters owned the property during the Civil War which the Battle of Cedar Hill happened on the property.

Battle of Cloyd's Mountain In 1964 the Battle of Cloyd’s Mountain took place at Back Creek Farm in Pulaski County, VA where two Hoge soldiers died using a Gatling gun similar to this one.
Hoge-Plank House James Fulton Hoge, General James son’s house. The General purchased the home from the Robinson’s in 1836 and later gifted it to his son as a wedding gift. When James died in 1973, the family lived there 1885 when the put it up for sale. Sold it to the Weddles in 1905 who then sold it to the Planks in 1942. The Hahn family currently owns the property since 1984.

He inherited Wheatland while his brother, Samuel Sayers Hoge lived not too far away in what is now called Doe Creek Farm, built in 1883. Sam’s sons continued the apple orchard business.

James Mayo Hoge's Clock This is one of the most remarkable American tall clocks known. This clock may have originally been owned by James Hoge of Montgomery County, Virginia. Sebastian Wygal purchased a "Clock & Case" from Hoge's estate in 1812 for $66.25. No other piece of furniture on Hoge's inventory was valued as high. This value was on par with other elegantly inlaid tall case clocks of the time. It is currently in the Art Museum in Colonial Williamsburg, VA.
John Hoge's House John Hoge was General James Hoge’s brother, James Mayo Hoge’s son. He purchased the home after James Mayo’s death in 1812. The current owner is renovating the home as of 2020.
Beverly Lacy and Nettie Hoge's Wedding picture Nettie was 18 years old when she married Beverly “Lacy” Hoge. He was 24 years old.
Belle-Hampton Main House Not sure of the date, but looking at the car, maybe 1940s. The building on the right is no longer, but it brings into question the date of the smokehouse.

Robert Hammet Robert is the brother of Sue Hammet, Governor Tyler’s wife. He died in 1864 in the Battle of Resaca, Georgia.
Stockton Heth Tyler Heth inherited Belle Hampton from his parents, Governor James Hoge Tyler. He added the swimming pool and tennis court and added the garage to the cottage and kitchen to the Main house about 1930.

Vick's House in Raleigh, NC Taken about 1945 at the Vick house in Raleigh, NC. Annie Hoge, oldest daughter of Beverley Lacy Hoge, married Dr. George Davis Vick. Beverly Lacy’s wife, Nettie is seen in the picture along with her youngest daughter Nettie who had Down Syndrome. Annie’s grandchildren, Eloise’s children, George and Durant are pictured as well as Robert Hatcher Hoge’s wife, Marge, and children Colver , Renon, and Margo.
Wheatland burned down in 1988, but here is an article on how it escaped Yankee Shelling. The property sold outside of the family in 1960s. The new owner’s attempted to restore it, but made limited progress before it was vandalized and lost forever.
Wheatland Article Wheatland was the home of Joseph Haven Hoge, General James Hoge’s son. The house was sold outside of the family to a retired Virginia Tech professor. Unfortunately the work never was completed and the house was vandalized and eventually destroyed by fire.
Wheatland, Giles County, VA Wheatland in Giles County, VA where Joseph Haven Hoge lived. Joseph was the son of General James Hoge who willed the land to him. The house used be off 460 in Hoges Chapel, but was vandalized and eventually burnt to the ground.
Sunnyside Sunnyside is the neighbor property to Belle-Hampton. The original cabin built pre-1767 was built onto. The next house was built onto then the original section was torn down.
Alexander Black House Moving into Walnut Spring with her brother Otey after her husband’s death in 1903, Lulu became the wage earner. Her position in 1905 was the Blacksburg, VA Postmaster. In 1910 she bought the Alexander Black House on the corner of Draper and Clay Street in downtown Blacksburg. She and the children moved there, but the young widow, only 31 years after her husband’s death, must have had difficulty raising six children. In 1915 she decided to get wed again to John James Davis, a professor who was 12 years younger.
The Cottage Taken in 1929 by F. B. Kegly, this picture shows Belle Hampton’s cooking and cleaning house with just the garage added. In the late 1960s early 70s, a right side was added as a bedroom.

Governor J. Hoge Tyler at Halwick In 1896, William Jennings Bryan ran unsuccessfully for president of the United States. Bryan, a former Democratic congressman from Nebraska, had a campaign event at Halwick.
Robert Hunter Hoge was born in Jackson, GA. He is the son of Beverly Lacy Hoge. He graduated from Virginia Tech in 1925 and went to work for GE. He eventually become the President of Clark Control and retired as an artist in Carmel Valley, CA.

Andrew Hoge (1842-1863) was a sharpshooter in the Civil War as a confederate soldier. He was killed in the Battle of Gettysburg as captured here by this photograph.
James Fulton Hoge married Eliza Jane Johnston. She was raised in this house which is now the Giles County Historical Society.
At 4 o'clock is John Chapman Snidow (died 1876). His wife, Annie Hoge Snidow (1841-1888) at 6 o'clock is Beverly Lacy Hoge's sister. She is the granddaughter of Andrew Johnston.
Doe Creek Farm, located on the flanks of Salt Pond Mountain in Giles County, is a commercial apple orchard and stock farm established in 1883. The farm centers on the 1883 Greek Revival farmhouse of Samuel Sayers Hoge, Sr. and Mollie Price Hoge, a two-story frame house with elaborate paneled entry surrounds. Near the house stand a large half-dovetailed log smokehouse, a molded concrete mounting block, and a board-and-batten honey house. The latter, used in beekeeping, relates to the farm’s 20th-century specialization of apple production. Samuel and Mollie’s sons—Samuel Sayers Jr., Joseph Haven Jr., and Dr. Albert Hammond Hoge—expanded an existing focus on apple production in the 1920s and by the eve of World War II had built the farm’s large apple packing house. Hoge Brothers, as the family business was known, also engaged in sheep and cattle production and built multiple gambrel-roofed stock and hay barns by the early 1950s. Also on the farm are a historic-period corncrib, scales house, tenant house, and African American cemetery. Doe Creek Farm, as the farm is known today, continues in use for apple production and is also operated as a wedding and event venue.
During the Civil War, Wheatland was attacked by artillery fire. However, because of the fog, they were not able to see the home clearly. This is the ball found at the house where it hit.
Joseph Haven Hoge (1820-1898) is the son of General James Hoge. He built Wheatland in Giles County, VA and married Susan Crockett Sayers (1825-1883).

James Hawes Hoge (1854-1930) is the son of Daniel Howe Hoge, General James Hoge's son. He married Georgia Karnes (1878-1906)
John Howe Hoge, son of Daniel Howe Hoge (1785-1857), General James Hoge's brother. His mom is Anne Nancy Stafford (1783-1853). He was an accomplished doctor, Reverend, and farmer. His diary was documented by Robert Hoge Hetherington.
Allene (or Elian) Johnston, daughter of David Johnston (1726-1786) and Nannie Abbott (died 1813). She married Issac Chapman.
Annie Hoge Vick (1888-1987) who is 4 years old and Beverly Lacy Hoge, Jr. (1890-1897) at 2 years old.
John T. S. Hoge, Jr (1900-1923) is pictured here in 1918 in his WWI uniform. He passed away after returning home from the war injured. He is holding Joseph Haven Hoge, Jr, (1918-) who eventually became a doctor. His parents are Joseph Haven Hoge (1892-) and Marie Campbell Doyne (1895-)
